Facebook Live Interview: Cathie Humbarger, Rep. Joanna King: August 12, 2021

CATHIE: This Cathie Humbarger with Right to Life of Northeast Indiana. I am here with Representative Joanna King, and you represent District 49?

JOANNA: That’s correct.

CATHIE: We’re so grateful to be with you tonight. The awful Southern District Federal Court decision that came down on Tuesday has us all just in shock. And I just wanted to ask you, pretty much with the stroke of a pen, the judge issued a permanent injunction on much of the legislation we passed regulating the abortion industry in the last decade. So, as a legislator, how do you feel about that? That you worked hard to get these laws passed and this is what happens?

JOANNA: So, my colleagues and I worked very hard on the House floor, and committee meetings, and just in general preparing for each session, to pass good laws that…

CATHIE: Common sense.

JOANNA: …common-sense laws that keep our families safe, keep our women safe, keep our children safe. And it’s very disheartening to see with the stroke of a pen, things like telemedicine being pulled away from the abortion laws we have passed. House Bill 1577 was an important bill. It had a lot of important steps in making sure that clinics are giving the right information, the correct information to women and families. It’s disheartening to know that that information will not be given anymore. But, we march forward. We continue to take thoughtful approach and careful steps to make sure that we continue to fight for the life of our children in Indiana. That’s what I’m committed to do.

CATHIE: Well, thank you so much, and I’m so appreciative of our Solicitor General, Tom , who defends these laws in court. And I know he has already filed for an emergency stay on the decision that was handed down on Tuesday. So, this is not over by any stretch of the imagination. We’re going to stay in the fight.

JOANNA: Absolutely.

CATHIE: And we’re not giving up.

JOANNA: And I appreciate your thoughtfulness in helping legislators understand what’s going on at the ground level. We need to know so we can create and write laws that are beneficial for all Hoosiers.

CATHIE: Absolutely. And holding abortionists accountable to safe medical regulations that every other physician has to follow.

JOANNA: Absolutely, that’s correct. So, thank you for what you’re doing.

CATHIE: You’re welcome and thank you for being here.
